EV Charger Installation in Norwich
Norwich's terrace streets and suburban driveways make home charging the practical default — but installation is regulated electrical work, not a plug-in job.
The rules
Fixed charge point installation is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. In practice you use a registered competent person electrician (NICEIC, NAPIT and similar schemes), who self-certifies the installation and issues a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. The charger must be a smart charger meeting the smart charging regulations (off-peak scheduling capability), in force since June 2022.
Indicative costs (2026, not quotes)
| Item | Range |
|---|---|
| 7kW smart charger, supplied | £450–£1,000 |
| Standard installation | £250–£500 |
| Longer cable runs / trenching / separate earthing | £150–£800 extra |
Driveway installations are straightforward; terrace houses with cable runs from rear boards, or properties where the meter and the parking are far apart, cost more.
Choosing an installer
- Verify competent person scheme registration on the scheme's public register.
- Get an itemised quote: charger model, earthing arrangements, cable route, containment, testing and certification.
- On completion you should receive: an Electrical Installation Certificate, the notification certificate, and a demonstration of the charger's app.
Norwich practicalities
Terraced Golden Triangle and Heigham properties often need careful cable routing; new-builds in the north of the city frequently have pre-drilled ducting. Where off-street parking doesn't exist, look at the public charging networks expanding across Norwich car parks and park-and-ride sites instead of home installation.
